These cluster of islands lie off the East coast of Spain. The main islands are Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera, which all well know tourist destinations. Official languages include both Catalan and Spanish. A lesser known island is Cabrera, home to the Parc Nacional de l'Arxipélag.
The largest island, Mallorca (also known as Majorca in English), is host to the coastal Capital "Palma". The old area of the town is full of little enchanting streets while the Bellver Castle is a perfect place to take in impressive views of the landscape. The Island is surrounded by breathtaking sandy beaches and coves, set against a backdrop of glorious mountains and woodlands. The Caves of Drach are not to be missed. A floating orchestra performs on a illuminated underground lake after a journey through a mile of impressive caverns.
Resorts of every description are plentiful, with ample bars, restaurants and nightlife. Many of which are open all night. Some well known locations are Magaluf; a party haven; Palma Nova; a more relaxed resort which is popular with families and Valdemossa, famous for its monastery and renowned for its music festivals. Cala d'Or has the largest holiday community on the island and is situated in the south east. Marina's are abundant on all the islands and you will find an assortment of water sports to suit all tastes.
Ibiza has a reputation for being the party capital of the Med with resorts such as San Antonio. However it has a lot more to offer. Away from the hectic clubs and bars there are numerous isolated sandy coves and charming villages to discover such as San Josep. Es Canar is home to an open-air market, while charismatic Ibiza town offers the visitor many cafés along the waterfront, stylish boutiques, interesting winding streets and typical white houses.
Mahon, the capital of Minorca, has an interesting mixture of both local and colonial architecture due to the fact it was previously ruled by England. The harbour area is alive at nighttime with busy café bars and restaurants which tend to be far more popular and evident than clubs and busy discos. Minorca is awash with cultural sites and interests. The church of Santa Maria hosts an impressive organ with 3,006 pipes. While the island itself, has the largest concentration of discovered bronze-age settlements in the world.
In keeping with mainland Spain, Fiesta's are plentiful on all the Islands all year round. The biggest being Semana Santa (Easter Week).
